Military infirmary Moldova, the architect Mihail Konstantinovichi Chekeruli-Kush
The architect Mihail Konstantinovichi Chekeruli-Kush was the author of the most beautiful buildings in Chisinau. Though, there is too little information about his personality. Libraries give only general information about his life and his creations. Anyway we tried hard to find more about him. For justice’s sake let’s make an excursion and speak about the heritage Chekeruli-Kush has left in the Moldovan capital.
MILITARY INFIRMARY MOLDOVA
The citizen of Chisinau Mihail Chekeruli-Kush was born in 1864. His father was a councilor of State. Mother was a housewife taking care of children. There were a lot of kids in the family. When time came, Mihail went to Kharkov to enroll into a higher educational institution. He successfully graduated Technological Institute and became an engineer. But he strived to be an architect.
After graduation young engineer came back to Chisinau and after some time was appointed as an architect of the capital city. He worked as an architect till 1898 and then at 34 age old Mihail Konstantinovichi was appointed as a chief of a building committee, which appeared not long ago before Chekeruli-Kush became its chief. The aim of the committee was to control the building of city structures.
Chekeruli-Kush achieved fame after he had built a theatre in 1900. It was very popular among the citizens of Chisinau and foreigners liked to go to the Pushkin’s lecture hall that was situated at the corner of Matievici Street and Pushkin Street. Today one of the buildings of the Moldova State University is situated there. World known celebrities, actors and singers performed in the Pushkin’s lecture hall. They made performances and gave concerts in this hall. The building projected by Chekeruli-Kush was burned in 1928.

If you want to see one of the saved buildings of Chekeruli-Kush you have to go to the end of Stefan eel Mare Boulevard to the main building of Moldova Medical University (Stefan eel Mare blvd., 165). This building was erected in 1905 due to the project of Chekeruli-Kush. That time it was designed for the military infirmary. It was two-storied building with 114 windows. However, all the windows were preserved in our days too. The building looks today as it looked 104 years ago. From 1950 the Medical University was established in this building.
